8th grade Objectives Eighth grade language arts is a survey course designed to expose students to literature, vocabulary, writing, and oral communications. This year, students will utilize Reading Apprenticeship strategies & be exposed to the Common Core State Standards. Reading We read a lot, so be sure you have a reading book with you in class every day. I will take you to the library every Friday. Here are some more sources. Amazon ALA Books for Young Adult Communication MiStar Students and parents are encouraged to check their grades through the grading program. I use the grading program as the main way of communication. Both grades and agendas are updated by Fridays. Absent Work I follow Pathfinder’s policy on absent work. When coming back to school, it is the student’s responsibility to find details of what they missed. My agenda can be found online each Monday morning, so parents also can see what it is they missed. Students should gather missed material from the "extra copies" crate on my front table. Students are also responsible for turning in any work that was collected or due during their absence(s). That’s why it is IMPERATIVE that you check the agenda to see if you missed turning anything in. Due dates previously announced in class still apply. Late Work Late work is accepted during the current unit only, with a 20% deduction in points penalty. Once the summative test is given, or any cumulative projects turned in, any late work for that unit will not be accepted for full credit. It will be given 1 pt. to remove it as a missing assignment. This is to encourage the completion of assignments during the learning phase of the unit. Late summative work will be accepted for up to two weeks past the summative due date/test date (check Mistar for the date it was due.) Test retakes Summative tests may be retaken when additional student-initiated practice has been completed with 85% accuracy or better. Retakes are given after school only, on an agreed upon day. Summative/Formative grading Formative assignments (practice assignments) will account for 15% of a student's overall grade. Summative assessments (tests at the end of each unit) will account for 85% of a student's overall grade. |
